How to "read" hand dyed yarn online

I was just asked on facebook how to tell if a skein on-line will knit up, without being able to see it in the flesh. So I thought I'd pop up a few quick tips, and it has also given me a great idea for additional images to add to the site, to help you choose the perfect yarn for your projects! There are three main types of yarn I dye:  1) Semi solids - are yarns that have the same over all main colour, but has tonal variation. Oxygen series launch

So if you live in the UK (as we do) then you will know that since early June everything has been a bit topsy turvy - politically speaking - and it has also been a bit of a roller coaster behinds the scenes at Ovis Yarns. One of the songs which always finds me at times like this is Oxygen by Willy Mason - here -  So I decided to create a small series of 5 yarns based on key phrases and lyrics... Weekly notes 4: August is here, 3 weeks to go.

Week 4: * Our small wooden loom kits have proved very popular! So popular they have sold out. I've got some more in production, so hopefully I'll have some available at the PopUp Wool show and then on the site after. But there are still a few hand-held mini looms available - these really are ingenious and great for children to start learning on.  * NeNe shawl is finally complete and blocked, all I have to do is arrange a photo shoot and then the pattern will be released! * Designer bootcamp - I didn't end up blogging about this...

Yarn of the Month: Klaxon

Yarn of the Month: Klaxon

How terrible has the British weather been lately? So to cheer everyone up I have chosen our brightest, most fluorescent colour way to be yarn of the month: Klaxon! Klaxon was inspired by the band of the same name that I saw live many moons ago (the NME new wave tour if I remember correctly, but that whole phase of my life may be slightly tinged in Jagermeister and a little hazy!) It is bright and bold, neon greens, yellows and a splash of bright turquoise - it is a little ray of sunshine in these dreary grey stormy days. Until...
